FAQs

Can I Do the Assessment Myself?

In short: no. BASIX Certificates and NatHERS energy ratings must be prepared by qualified practitioners using approved tools, and councils or certifiers require properly issued documentation for approvals.

Why DIY doesn’t work for BASIX

BASIX certification is issued via the NSW Planning portal using recognised assessment inputs. The certificate includes a set of commitments (e.g., specific insulation levels, window performance and water measures) that must be met during construction. Self‑prepared or informal documents won’t be accepted at DA or CDC stage.

Why DIY doesn’t work for NatHERS

NatHERS modelling must be carried out by accredited assessors using approved software. The work requires detailed knowledge of building physics, climate files and compliance pathways. Assessors are accredited through organisations such as Design Matters National (DMN) or ABSA and are bound by quality assurance processes.

The risk of attempting it yourself

  • Approval delays when documents are rejected.
  • Rework costs if late design changes are needed to meet targets.
  • Performance shortfalls that leave the home too hot or cold.
  • Compliance issues at the end of construction if commitments aren’t met.

Benefits of using Evergreen Energy Consultants

  1. Accredited expertise – we’re experienced in NSW compliance and local climates (Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Hunter Valley, Byron Bay and beyond).
  2. Speed – typical turnaround in three business days.
  3. Practical design advice – targeted, cost‑effective recommendations if results are borderline.
  4. Coordination – we align BASIX and NatHERS deliverables so you’re covered.

What you can do yourself (that actually helps)

  • Provide complete, up‑to‑date plans (floor plans, elevations, sections, site plan).
  • Share window schedules and insulation specs if available.
  • Flag any non‑standard features early (e.g., large west‑facing glazing, raked ceilings, high voids).
