Do I Need a BASIX for a Swimming Pool?

Yes – if your swimming pool or outdoor spa has a capacity greater than 40,000 litres, it typically requires a BASIX Certificate in NSW. The purpose is to ensure appropriate water‑saving measures and energy‑efficient heating systems (where applicable) are in place. BASIX certificates are lodged as part of the development approval process.

What does BASIX look at for pools?

  • Water consumption – covers such things as efficient filtration, covers to reduce evaporation and, where relevant, rainwater or top‑up strategies. These requirements are designed to reduce water consumption and improve overall energy efficiency.
  • Heating – if your pool or spa is heated, BASIX considers the efficiency and energy source of the heating system (e.g., heat pumps, solar, gas) and the use of covers.
  • Integration with the dwelling – when part of a broader residential project, pool commitments align with the home’s overall BASIX Certificate.

Why compliance matters

Non‑compliant pools can delay approvals or lead to costly changes late in the build. Evergreen EC ensures that your pool design meets BASIX requirements and that commitments are clear for your builder and certifier. BASIX requirements for pools are set by NSW planning legislation.

Tips to make pool BASIX easier

  1. Plan heating early – specify an efficient system and include a cover to reduce energy demand.
  2. Use an appropriate cover – reduces evaporation and improves heating efficiency.
  3. Coordinate with your main BASIX – if the pool is part of a new home, handle the certification together for a smoother process.
